6.  9 Best Sofas Under $500 – Reviews

What are some things that I should look for in a sofa under $500?

The best quality sofas under $500 are invariably made from a combination of the best materials.

The key to finding the best, highest-quality sofa under $500 is simply knowing which sofa in your price range has the best combination of these materials for the best price.

Sofas under $500 have many different parts that serve different purposes and have different qualities. These include things that provide strength, support, comfort, durability, longevity, and style. The parts that we will be concerned with in this section are the frame, cushions, and upholstery.

What’s in a frame?

Plastic, hardwoods and softwoods are all common materials for sofa frames. There are many different types of each with different qualities and strengths. So, which type of frame should you choose when looking for the best sofas under $500?

The strongest frames for sofas under $500 are those built from hardwoods.

There are a lot of different types of hardwoods that are used in the construction of furniture frames, including sofas. A few of the most common types of hardwoods used to build sofa frames are white ash, beech, birch, red oak, white oak, mahogany, and American elm.

These are the most popular types of hardwoods because most of them are made from species of hardwood trees that are fast growing when compared to most hardwoods. Most hardwood furniture comes from fast-growing hardwoods harvested from lumber farms. Therefore, I feel like this is the most environmentally friendly way to build hardwood furniture and try to recommend only things built from strong, fast growing trees that can be easily replenished.

Consequently, the fast-growing nature of these trees is very beneficial for us when we are shopping for furniture.  The fact that these hardwoods are strong, as well as easily replenished, means that we can buy a high-quality, durable sofa frame for a very low price.

Plastic is the weakest material for a sofa frame.

A lot of sofas under $500, unfortunately, feature a plastic frame. We generally only recommend plastic feet, and not plastic frames, for our sofas under $500.However, there are some quality furniture pieces out there that are constructed with a plastic frame. Although we strongly recommend against it, there are a few things to look for if you’re set on buying a sofa, or any piece of furniture,  that is made with a plastic frame.

What kind of plastic are plastic frames made from and how are they made?

There are a few different types of plastic that are used in the construction of furniture. Most of them should be avoided. If you insist on buying plastic framed furniture, we recommend that you choose only things made from low-density polyethylene.

Low-density polyethylene, or LDPE, is a strong, versatile type of plastic. After the frame is made, it is capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 175 degrees Fahrenheit without reacting.

LDPE frames are made using a process called plastic injection molding.

A steel mold is created in two halves. One half has an empty cavity in the shape of the furniture frame. The other half has the back details of the furniture frame and a set of pins that push out to eject the finished part from the mold.

This furniture mold is inserted into a hydraulic press called an injection molding machine. The injection molding machine puts an enormous amount of pressure on the mold to hold it shut. While the press is holding the mold shut, molten plastic is injected into the cavity of the mold.

After it cools, the press opens, and your fully formed furniture frame is ejected from the mold.

It is important to know this information if you are considering purchasing a plastic frame. This way, you can consider the potential weaknesses and defects that come with plastic injection molding, and make an informed decision.

Softwoods are similar to hardwoods.

Softwoods are not necessarily any softer than hardwoods.

It all comes down to the density of a particular species of tree. The hardest softwoods are harder than the softest hardwoods. However, the hardest hardwoods are much harder than every type of softwood.

Lower density softwood furniture will begin to show signs of sag sooner than any other sofa frame material.  If you are considering softwood furniture, try to choose something made from long leaf pine, Douglas fir, or yew. They are considerably harder than many hardwoods. When made into sofa frames they generally have a quality and durability rivaling that of hardwoods.

Okay, I found a frame for my sofa under $500. Now, where do I sit?

A cushion is basically just a bag stuffed with some type of soft material.

Researching the material used to stuff your cushions is one of the most important steps of purchasing your sofa under $500. After all, if you are not comfortable where you sit or lie down, then your sofa certainly is not serving it’s purpose.

What options do I have to keep my sofa under $500?

Cushion stuffing comes in many different forms. There are high-quality memory gels, spring-filled box cushions, linens, cottons, and dozens of types in between. To keep this short, we will discuss only the types that are most commonly used in sofas under $500.

Polyester fiber

2017 is going to be a great year for polyester.

Polyester is one of the most widely used materials in many different industries. It has nearly unlimited applications in clothing, home decor, indoor and outdoor furniture, car seats, towels; The list could go on forever. The point is, polyester is so widely used because it has two great qualities that make it attractive to manufacturers and consumers alike.

It is comfortable, and it is cheap.

As a fiber, it is most commonly used for pillows and cushions. You know, that white fluffy stuff that pokes out of your pillow as it begins to wear? That’s polyester fiber.

The main benefit of using polyester fiber is the price.

Polyester fiber is the most cost effective of all available cushion stuffing. It is comfortable and cheap, it’s wide use will attest to that.  It also comes in many different densities. The more dense the fiber, the higher the price.

If you are looking for a polyester fiber sofa under $500 that will last you for a long time, you will want to try to find a high density fiber with a low price.

Polyester fiber does come with some downsides.

Lower density polyester fibers tend to flatten out pretty quickly, and it is near impossible to regain the shape and support once this happens.

The type of polyester fiber we recommend using is what are called cluster-polyester fibers. These are tiny balls of polyester packed closely together. This makes the polyester extremely durable, comfortable, and strong.

Foam

Foam the most common type of sofa cushion filling.

There are several types of foam that you may find in a sofa under $500. The most common is low-density polyurethane, or LDP, foam. Low-density polyurethane foam has been used as a sofa filling for decades.

Low-density polyurethane is generally cut into a block the exact shape of the cushion. The cushion covering is then put over the block and you now have a cushion.

It is the cheapest of all cushion fillings and there is definitely a reason for it.

Low-density polyurethane tends to degrade and fall apart with normal use. It is uncommon to have a sofa that uses low-density polyurethane cushions last for more than 5 years.

Memory foam

As they become cheaper, furniture manufacturers have been seen moving away from low-density polyurethane foams and going towards memory foams.

There are three categories of memory foams – low density, medium density, and high density.

Low-density memory foam:  Density of 3 pounds per cubic foot or less. Try to avoid. Low-density memory foam provides little support and degrades quickly. Some vendors will try to pass off low-density memory foam as medium, or even high-density memory foam.

Medium-density memory foam:  Density of 4-5 pounds per cubic foot. If you are shopping for a memory foam sofa under $500, your best choice will be a nice medium-density memory foam. The price is low enough to push the sofa below the $500 mark, and the quality is high enough that it will last you a long time and remain comfortable.

High-density memory foam:  Density of 6 pounds per cubic foot or higher. High-density memory foam will feel stiff at first.  However, after a few minutes it will react to your body heat and mold to your body, providing unrivaled comfort and support.

High-density memory foam is what most luxury furniture manufacturers use in their high-end sofas and mattresses. The cost of high-density memory foam is still very high when compared to other cushion stuffing.

However, you can still find a nice medium-density memory foam sofa at an affordable price.

The easiest way to tell the difference between a low-density memory foam and a medium-density memory foam is how easily you sink into it. A low-density memory foam is softer, and you will sink in quickly. Whereas a medium-density memory foam is more firm. It will take longer for it to form to you, but it provides much more support.

If you are shopping for a memory foam sofa for under $500 we recommend only purchasing sofas with cushions made from medium-density or higher memory foam.

Low-density memory foam is similar to low-density polyurethane. In most cases, it will degrade quickly and not supply the value or support that you are looking for.

Great, I have a cushion! What material should I choose to cover the cushions of my sofa under $500?

In 2017, the range of options for your sofas upholstery are wide enough to fit everyone’s needs.

The options are nearly unlimited. From waterproof, to tear resistant, flame retardant, or wrinkle-free fabrics, there are many options to choose from. Here are a few of the most widely used types of upholstery on sofas under $500.

Leather: Genuine, faux, or bonded, they are all available for less then $500. However, if you’re shopping for a leather sofa, we recommend buying a sofa that uses bonded leather. It is softer and more comfortable than faux or genuine leather, all while maintaining that authentic leather look.

Microfiber: The best microfibers used in sofa upholstery are often made to mimic the feel of suede. However, unlike suede, this type of microfiber is designed to repel water. This makes it resistant to staining, and perfect for people with small children or pets.

Acrylic upholstery fabric: This type of fabric was originally developed around the time of World War II as a substitute for wool. It is made from derivatives of polypropylene plastic. This makes it more flammable than most other sofa coverings. As a result of that, most manufacturers add flame retardants and other chemicals into the fabric. If you are a person who is sensitive to chemicals, avoid any sofas under $500 made from acrylic upholstery fabric.

Cotton: Cotton is another popular sofa covering, as it is cheap and easy to work with. There are some downsides of purchasing a sofa with cotton coverings. For example, cotton is easily stained and cotton upholstery can be difficult to clean. If you have pets or small children you may want to avoid this, or invest in a quality sofa cleaning product. Also, cotton coverings are easily wrinkled. If this will be a problem for you, consider purchasing something else.

Linen: Linen is an exceptional and difficult to maintain type of fabric. It looks the most natural on a sofa, however, it will easily show signs of wear. In addition to that, it stains easily and can be difficult to clean. Most linen owners choose to have their upholstery cleaned professionally, as it has a tendency to shrink if you do not follow the cleaning instructions.

Polyester: Polyester is not only used inside the cushions, but to cover them as well. This kind of polyester is similar to polyester fibers in that it is strong and soft. However, polyester is rarely used alone in upholstery. A normal application of polyester would be in combination with either linen or wool. This makes the blend much stronger than it would be on it’s own, increasing the life of your linen or wool by years.

What kind of sofa under $500 do I need?

Now that you know what your options are, the type of sofa or couch you will want to buy will depend on a few things. We have created a guide you can follow to help you find the best sofa for your home that is under your $500 budget.

How large of a sofa do I need?

When it comes to sofas under $500, the perfect size will vary depending on a number of factors. Here is a list of a few questions that you should ask yourself to help you determine the perfect size of sofa that you need for your home:

How many people will use this sofa? To determine the number of seats you need for your sofa, try to consider everyone that will use this sofa regularly and consider any additional seating you have in the room. There are some larger sectional sofas under $500 here, if you need more space than a traditional 3 seat sofa provides. Or, we also have the best living room sets under $1000 here if you want a little something extra.

Will I sleep on my sofa?  Size is an important thing to consider if you plan to ever sleep on your sofa. You want the length of the cushion space between the armrests to be enough for you to lie down and relax comfortably.

How deep do I want my sofa to be? An often overlooked consideration of sofa size is the depth of the sofa. Depth is measured from the front end of the cushion, to the back. How much seating space do you need for each person? For reference, the average sofa has a 40 inch depth.

How much space do I have? You will want to measure twice, so you can buy only once. This is the best advice we can give on this subject. So, measure the amount of space you have to work with in your home. Include a sufficient amount of space in front of your sofa for you and your family to stretch your legs. Don’t be afraid to message a seller if the dimensions aren’t readily available in the product description. If you don’t have sufficient enough space to include a sofa in your room, we have the best cheap loveseats for you here also.

How will I get my sofa into my home? This may be the most important item on this list. If you can’t get it into your home, there is no point in buying it. Measure your entryway, and consider that in most cases you can turn your sofa to give you the best dimensions when trying to bring it inside. A couple of other things to remember – the feet are removable, and the top pillow cushions are easily pushed down to decrease the width as you bring it through your entryway.

Will my pets be on the sofa?

If you own pets, and there is a chance that they will be on your sofa, you are going to want something that is both tear, and stain resistant. Also consider if you are willing to clean pet hair off of your sofa on a regular basis. If you do have a furry friend that will be on your sofa regularly, consider getting something in leather. Leather is resistant to both staining and tears, and is much easier to remove pet hair from than any other type of fabric.

Is there a chance I could spill something on it?

Will you be eating or drinking on or near your sofa? If leather isn’t your thing, consider purchasing a microfiber sofa. Most spills can easily be wiped away, or soaked up with a wet rag. Microfiber is both stain resistant and cheap. This makes it one of the best choices for your sofa under $500 if you, your family, or friends will be eating and drinking in your living room.

Best Sofas Under $500
Signature Design Sofa by Ashley Darcy in Stone Fabric

The Signature Design Sofa by Ashley Darcy comes with a number of great features that are difficult to find on a sofa under $500.

First, we will start with the only small downside of this sofa to get it out of the way. This sofa comes shipped with faux wood feet, that are actually plastic, and they must be attached.

As with most sofas under $500, there is a thin black cloth covering the bottom of the sofa to hide the frame. For some, it may be difficult to locate the holes to attach the feet through this cloth. Although the feet are plastic, they are high quality and durable. Once attached to the sofa they look fantastic.

The cushions are made from a dense foam, wrapped in a polyester fiber covering. A small piece of velcro holds each cushion in place so they don’t slip or sag.

If you want to clean your sofa, the cushion coverings have a zipper on the back that allows you to remove them and put them in the washing machine. This also means that a decade from now if your cushions begin to wear, you can easily remove and replace the stuffing inside of them.

The polyester fiber covering is enhanced with microfiber, making this sofa great for spills and pets. Most liquids tend to bead up when spilled on this sofa, and they are easily wiped away. The frame is built strong, and a 300 pound person should have no trouble relaxing comfortably in this sofa.

The sofa measures 90 inches in length, and 40 inches in height without the legs attached. It’s shape makes it easy to turn when bringing it into your home. Also, the bottom cushions can be removed if you do not have a large enough entryway.

Things That I Like:

  • Comfortable, dense foam cushions
  • Plush armrests
  • Comes in multiple colors
  • Perfect mid-size sofa fits in almost any space

The 74 inch length of the sofa itself may be too short for some to lie comfortably, however, with a full recliner on each end there is plenty of space for someone of any height to stretch out and relax.

The high-density foam that fills the cushions is plush and thick. It feels both soft and supportive, but takes a while to break in properly. As with most sofas under $500, the cushions may feel overly firm when you first receive your sofa.
